Manchester United appear set to secure their first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim, with reports suggesting that teenage defender Diego Leon is on the verge of joining the club. The 17-year-old left-back, who currently plays for Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno, is expected to complete a deal worth approximately £6 million, including add-ons.

Talks between United and Cerro Porteno began earlier this week, and the negotiations have reportedly reached an advanced stage. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that an agreement is close, with discussions now focused on Leon’s personal terms. The young Paraguayan has already traveled to England to finalize the details of the move, marking a significant step in his burgeoning career.

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United’s technical director, is believed to be overseeing the transfer. Wilcox, who joined United from Southampton earlier this year and previously served as academy director at Manchester City, has been actively involved in strengthening United’s youth ranks. This week, the club also signed Emmanuel Ziro, a promising midfielder from the Cre8tive Football Academy in west London, who had reportedly attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Wilcox’s growing involvement in United’s transfer dealings comes in the wake of Dan Ashworth’s sudden departure as sporting director. Ashworth left the club by mutual consent after just five months in the role, creating a temporary vacancy that Wilcox appears to be filling. He is expected to collaborate closely with Christopher Vivell, United’s interim director of recruitment, who joined the club during the summer after a brief stint at Chelsea.

The impending arrival of Diego Leon signals United’s commitment to building a strong foundation for the future by investing in young talent. This approach aligns with Ruben Amorim’s vision for the club as he embarks on his first transfer window as head coach. As January approaches, all eyes will be on Manchester United to see how these early moves shape their long-term strategy under new leadership.
