David Coote, a Premier League referee, has had his contract terminated following an investigation into his off-field behavior. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) concluded that Coote had breached his terms of employment “in a serious breach,” which led to his immediate removal from his position. The investigation followed two significant claims about the 42-year-old official that came to light in November. The first was a video leak in which Coote was heard making offensive comments about Jürgen Klopp, then the Liverpool manager. The second incident involved a video published by The Sun showing Coote appearing to sniff white powder, which raised concerns about potential drug use.
A spokesperson for PGMOL stated, “Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect. David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.” The investigation process was described as thorough to ensure that the claims were validated and allowed Coote the opportunity to respond. However, this decision was accompanied by the announcement that Coote is now under investigation for three additional allegations.
The Football Association (FA) is looking into claims that Coote had discussed awarding a yellow card to a player before and after refereeing a Championship match between Leeds and West Brom in October 2019. Coote has denied these allegations, calling them “false and defamatory.” The FA is also reviewing the language Coote used when referring to Klopp, as it may have violated rules concerning protected characteristics. Additionally, Uefa is investigating the drug use allegations that reportedly took place while Coote worked as a support VAR during the European Championship in 2023. Coote has been suspended from Uefa’s VAR list.
Coote began officiating Premier League matches in 2018 and became part of the elite Select Group of referees. His career peak came in 2023 when he officiated the Carabao Cup final. However, his tenure has not been without controversy, notably his VAR decision not to punish Everton’s Jordan Pickford for a challenge that sidelined Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk for 10 months. The fallout from the scandal has raised concerns about Coote’s safety, and PGMOL has expressed its commitment to supporting his welfare. Coote also retains the right to appeal the termination of his employment.
