Mikel Arteta responded firmly to Ruben Amorim’s comments following Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Manchester United, which featured two goals from set-pieces. Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a well-placed header from Bukayo Saka’s corner, and William Saliba doubled the lead through a scrappy goal after a corner from Thomas Partey. These two goals highlighted Arsenal’s proficiency in set-pieces, a facet of their game that Amorim had previously suggested was a key part of Arsenal’s strategy. Amorim implied that Arsenal’s wingers, Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, intentionally aim to create corner-kick opportunities by drawing defenders toward the flag.

Arteta, however, rejected the idea that his team’s game plan revolves exclusively around corners. In response to Amorim’s observations, he emphasized the variety and versatility in Arsenal’s attacking approach. Arteta pointed out that last season, Arsenal scored the most goals in the club’s history, “not because of only set pieces,” but due to their general attacking play. He stressed the importance of “individual and magic moments” from players who can create goals from different situations—whether through short or long counterattacks, build-up play, or restarts. He mentioned that Arsenal works to exploit any potential weakness in the opposition, whether by targeting spaces for wingers, full-backs, or strikers.

Despite downplaying the exclusive focus on set-pieces, Arteta acknowledged their importance as one of Arsenal’s many tactical tools. He noted, “We need that [threat],” explaining that his team aims to be “very dangerous and very effective from every angle and every phase of play.” Arteta also reflected on how Arsenal’s attacking mindset ensures they remain a threat in various situations. The victory marked their 22nd set-piece goal since the start of the previous season, making them the most prolific English team in this regard.

Looking ahead, Arsenal, who are currently seven points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, will aim to continue their good form when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage next.
