Real Madrid’s team coach was involved in a road accident on the M40 motorway in Warwickshire, England, following their recent Champions League defeat to Liverpool. The collision occurred on Thursday afternoon and involved the team’s bus, a lorry, and a car. The bus was transporting equipment back to Spain after the match. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The players had already flown back to Madrid after their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield, so they were not on board at the time of the crash.
The incident took place while the bus was traveling southbound between junctions 16 and 15. Emergency services, including police, responded to the scene, where footage showed the damaged bus stationary on the side of the motorway. The crash led to significant traffic delays in the area. Warwickshire Police confirmed that there were no serious injuries and clarified that the players were not involved in the accident. The police statement mentioned, “Our officers responded to reports of a collision involving a car, a lorry and the coach of a well-known football team on the M40 southbound. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured. The players were not on the coach at the time.”
The timing of the crash added to the frustration of Real Madrid, as the incident occurred just one day after their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League. This defeat left the 15-time European champions in 24th place under the new competition format, and it was their third loss in five matches. Their chances of advancing to the knockout stage were now uncertain. Liverpool’s victory was their third consecutive win in the competition, which solidified their place at the top of the group with three games remaining.
The goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo sealed Liverpool’s victory, while Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe missed a crucial penalty. This loss marked Madrid’s first defeat to Liverpool since 2009, after previously defeating them in the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals. For Real Madrid, the focus has now shifted to recovering from this setback both on and off the pitch.
