AC Milan has confirmed that defender Matteo Gabbia has extended his contract with the club, keeping him at the Rossoneri until June 2029. The 25-year-old, a product of Milan’s youth academy, rejoined the club in January 2024 after spending time on loan at Lucchese and Villarreal. Since his return, Gabbia has become a regular fixture in Milan’s defense, making eight appearances this season in both Serie A and the Champions League. His consistent performances have earned him a call-up to the Italian national team, further highlighting his growing stature in the football world.

Gabbia’s recent form, however, was interrupted by a muscular injury that sidelined him for a month, limiting his playing time. Despite this setback, he made a significant impact in the Milan derby against Inter Milan on September 22, scoring a crucial goal in the team’s 2-1 victory. The goal added to his growing reputation as a reliable and effective player for Milan, particularly in high-pressure moments.

The club’s announcement of the contract extension was accompanied by a playful social media post featuring Gabbia in a cage, a reference to the Italian meaning of his surname, ‘Gabbia,’ which translates to ‘cage.’ The new contract reportedly sees Gabbia’s salary double, increasing from approximately €1 million per season to around €1.8 million, plus bonuses. His previous contract was set to expire in 2026, so this new deal extends his commitment to Milan for an additional three years.

Since his debut, Gabbia has made 84 senior appearances for the club, scoring five goals and providing one assist. His steady rise within Milan’s ranks is a testament to his hard work and resilience. By securing Gabbia for another five years, AC Milan is demonstrating confidence in his potential and solidifying their defensive line for the long term as they aim to continue competing at the highest level, both domestically and in Europe.
